Hiking Advanced Course

The advanced skills of mountain hiking

Flowing rivers and tour planning

In the advanced course for mountain hiking, we skip most of the usual and slightly easier parts and dive deeper into the more difficult parts. This means that the participants’ level of tackling more difficult problems is increased and thus creates an overcapacity towards what one is expected to face out there.

The most dangerous part of hiking in the mountains is when wading in flowing water. Therefore, we now take the bull at the horns and organize a course around the subject where we can really try to wade until we are practically washed away. Wading in groups and with different techniques and aids. An extremely well-needed knowledge if you are out on mountain hiking and the bridge is gone which happens all too often.

Perfect for mountain leaders and those who want to raise their skills around mountain hiking from a professional perspective but also you who are planning to hike and just want extra safety margins.

The goal is that after the course you will have a good foundation in orientating using map and compass, planning trips and deciding good and bad places to wade and what factors affect the crossing. We also want you to have a solid experience of wading so that you do not need to learn this when you need it the most.

Preliminary program

The first day we start by rehearsing some basics in mountain hiking. We also practice with map, compass and GPS and the techniques available here to make sure that the knowledge is fresh. We go through how to plan a mountain trip and what to consider when leading a group and how to do this from a systematic thought. After lunch we walk out to scout potential river crossings and all the parameters around this. We use easier methods to safely cross and go through tomorrow’s river practice.

Day 2 we go out to a nearby white water river and equip us with wetsuits and rescue lines. Here we try to throw both the rescue line and being rescued. Rules for how to behave and what you absolutely should not do. We eat lunch by the river.

After lunch we test to wade with additional techniques and aids to test the boundaries. How deep can we wade in flowing water with different support? Here we really build up a bank of experience and overcapacity.

In order to make this possible, we use white water rafting guides and extra safety measurements so that everything is done with the highest safety.

Good to know
Please write when booking if you are allergic to something or take medication for anything on a regular basis.

Please have a look at your home and travel insurance to see if your insurance covers this activity. We also recommend you have a look at your equipment well in advance so that you have a chance of breaking in new boots and trying out a new backpack in case you need to.

We recommend sturdy hiking boots, preferably with a somewhat higher shaft to protect the ankels. We do not recommend using normal trainers or trail running shoes.

The guide / instructor will get in touch before the experience to answer any questions you may have.
