Advanced Ski Touring Course
3 Days | Sylarna, Jämtland Sweden
Develop as a mountain traveller
In this course, we focus on more experience based training and put higher demands on you as a ski tourer to participate in decisions. You will get to put in the track and find the right path up and down with the guidance of experienced instructors.
Learn more advanced ski touring techniques
We will focus on tour planning before and during the tour, choice of routes and decision support both from an avalanche perspective but also other factors. This means that you will get to build your experience bank so that you can feel safe in planning and carrying out ski touring in different types of terrain and under different weather conditions.
The course starts in Storulvån with a short shuttle to reach Sylarna, 16 km from the road. This is the area where alpine activities in Sweden was born and the area is rich of cultural value and histories only a local guide will be able to tell you about. The accommodation is great and boasts several types of room standard as well as nice meals throughout the stay. At the evenings the sauna is a good place to recap the day before dinner. The area lies well above treeline with several classic ski runs to be made.
The goal is that after the course you will know what is required to do a little more advanced ski tours and have good opportunities to plan and implement good practice on slightly longer tours. It is also possible to mix some days to make them more course-specific or more guide oriented to make sure you get the most out of your trip.
Preliminary program
Day 1
When we reach Sylarna we will prepare the tour of the day, assess snow quality and ski runs, make a short tour and also train avalanche rescue to make sure everyone knows what to do.
In the evening we will recap the day and plan for the coming day using all the info we gathered during the day.
Day 2
Day 2 is usually a long day where we get to ski some of the classic runs depending on snow and avalanche conditions. If the weather is great and the snow is cold we are usually out the whole day, eating lunch on the go. If the conditions are rough we may make a run back to the lodge for lunch and then head out again afterwards.
Day 3
Day 3 we will start with some tour planning before breakfast to make sure we get out early and get to enjoy the mountains as much as possible. Before catching the ride back to civilization we will get the chance to ski several hundreds of height meters in amazing terrain, take a few photos and sum up the skills developed throughout the days.
When we get back to Storulvån where we started some waffles and coffee or something cold to drink welcomes us to enjoy in the sun.
