Swedish Backcountry Ski Touring
Imagine waking up under a warm blanket. The room is cold. Someone lights a match and soon the wood stove is roaring. Coffee, breakfast, trip plan. You look out through the window. Yesterday’s snow fall brought 30 cm of fresh snow and you know that we will have the mountains for ourselves. Except for Randi and Håkan, our hosts. They run Almdalen Mountain Farm year round and make sure we are staying well fed.
Almdalen Mountain Farm lies in the north of Jämtland, approximately 90 minutes from Östersund. The area is renowned for early season snow and is one of the places in the country with the highest depth of snow. Despite this, few visitors ever go here. That is partly because of the logistics. On this guided 3 day ski touring weekend, we have taken care of all that stuff. Transportation, snowmobile transfer, accommodation and all meals with 3 course dinners. We take care of the logistics and showing you where the trees are perfectly spaced for those powder turns. You on the other hand will have to put some logs in the stove once in a while, drink coffee, play games and in general have a good time.
The terrain around Almdalen Mountain Farm is varied and excellent for ski touring. The peaks may not be the highest but you can put in many laps and the terrain make every run feel unique and playful. Almdalen may have the best forest skiing in the country, come try it with us!

Preliminary program
Day 1
On the morning of day 1 we will meet in Östersund and continue with cars towards the small village of Lakavattnet. If you arrive in your own car, it is also possible to go straight here. From here we will ski behind a snowmobile while our equipment rides on a sled. Reaching the farm we will have an early lunch prepared by Håkan and then take a tour nearby. Here we will have a quick refresher of avalanche equipment before heading up towards the treeline. One or several runs will be possible before we head back towards the dinner table with a 3 course dinner.
Day 2
The second day we will have multiple options and may venture a bit further off. The day is adjusted to the participants but on the top of the agenda is high class powder skiing. The close proximity to varied terrain and slope angle makes the day very effective and without much transportation.
Day 3
The last of our ski touring days here at Almdalen Mountain Farm starts with a healthy breakfast and a whole bunch of nice ski runs. Perhaps a quick stop by the farm for something cold or warm to drink before we head off with the snowmobile towards civilisation. Even though this is the day for going home, you should expect to be tired in your legs and that you will have gotten several runs. We expect to be back in Östersund in the afternoon for those who may wish to travel by train or airplane.

Starting location:
The starting location is in Lakavattnet, about 1½-2 hours north of Östersund. No public transport goes there. We will meet up in the morning around 10.00 and on the second day we will finish around 16.00
You can also go to Östersund and we will pick you up and drop you off after the tour (add-on). In that case, we leave Östersund with the transfer at 08.00 in the morning on the first day and we get back again at around 17.00 on the last day.
Difficulty and prerequisites:
This trip is for those who have tried ski touring before, but you do not have to be an expert.
You need a normal level of fitness as we stay active throughout the day, but you do not have to be an athlete.
To make the most out of this weekend you will want to have done some off piste ski touring before.
Splitboarders need to be advanced riders given that being pulled behind the snowmobile can be a bit tricky on a board. You will also appreciate this when going downhill as you might need to plan your ride to get a good flow.
Please do not hesitate to ask questions.
Packing list:
A list of what you need to bring can be found here. If you have any questions, please ask.
Good to know:
Please mention if you are allergic to something, have special dietary needs, or take medication for anything on a regular basis when booking. Also make sure your insurance covers this activity and that your equipment is in good condition.
