Packing list: Hut to Hut Nordic Skiing Trip
January 2025, by Markus Nyman
What to bring
So you’re interested in going nordic skiing on a hut to hut trip? Here is a list of suggested items and clothing to bring. You will also need some skis, boots, poles and safety gear as well as food. This is all usually included and brought by your guide.Packing list
⬜️ Backpack, about 35-40 liters
⬜️ Small first aid kit with blister band-aids and blister prevention tape
⬜️ Personal medications
⬜️ Thermos bottle for hot drinks
⬜️ Water bottle (about 1½-2 liters of liquid per person per day, we will get more water at each hut)
⬜️ Powerbank and cords for charging electronics
⬜️ Head torch with spare batteries
⬜️ Camera/phone
⬜️ Plastic bag for trash (candy wrappers and so on)
⬜️ Toiletries, toothbrush
⬜️ Small piece of toilet paper, alcohol gel (more toilet paper are in the huts)
⬜️ Sun protection cream
⬜️ Sunglasses
⬜️ Ski goggles
⬜️ Membership card if required (indicated in emails from Deep Wild Scandinavia)
⬜️ Ear plugs
⬜️ Micro fiber towel if you like to have a shower or sauna
⬜️ Travel sheet liner, preferably not in cotton
⬜️ Spare t-shirt or fleece sweater which can be used as a pillow case during the trip and then used as a backup if very cold or if you would like to wear something after the trip.
Suggestions for clothing
⬜️ Wool baselayers
⬜️ Wool socks, minimum 2 pairs, but more than 3 should not be necessary
⬜️ Mid layers
⬜️ Shell layers, pant and jacket with a hood that can withstand high winds and be adjusted to fit snugly around your face. “Snap on / zip on hoods” that can come undone completely are not recommended.
⬜️ Extra mid layer or down jacket, to be worn during breaks or as a backup
⬜️ Hat, if later in the spring a cap might be good too.
⬜️ Gloves, minimum 2 pairs per person (preferably one thinner and one thicker)
⬜️ Gaiters for your feet/legs recommended
⬜️ Optional, clothes for wearing in the hut. Can be nice to change into something else while you let the clothes that you wore during the day dry off. Preferably lightweight and not too bulky.
What else…?
Use this list as a help when figuring out what to bring but also give it a thought of your own. Do you really need a tripod for your camera? Well bring one.
But by all means, going light is usually better. It not only saves your shoulders some weight but gives you a lower point of gravity and so it helps with your balance. Each day in the hut you will have a chance to dry things out so you rarely need 5 sets of clothing for a 4 day trip. Instead, aim to dry things out each night.
For later in the season there might be an elevated risk of sun burns, so bring plenty of cream and a cap. Late april is relatively bright so a head torch per person may be unnecessary.
Chopping wood so you can heat up the cabin and dry things
